7DKS’ Year-End Celebration 2012

7DKS X-mas_04

It was the best of times. It was Christmas time. So despite the intense South African summertime heat, we hopped into our suits and dresses, called up the limos, and took a little tour of our beloved City of Gold. We took the Breed team (well, those of them who hadn’t already hit the road for December) with us, adding a little more estrogen to our team.

After a quick pop by Supremebeing in Rosebank to take a look at our illustrator Kyle Baillie’s latest exhibition, we enjoyed a quick breakfast and then made for the Gold Reef City casino. Some of us even managed to make a little cash on the side. From there we hit Narina Trogon in Braamfontein for an awesome early dinner, and then it was on to The Griffin in Illovo.

It was a great day out for everyone, looking slicker than ever, and getting a chance to live the lavish life.

Super M: The M is for Me campaign

Super M

When Super M briefed us, they were looking for the chance to engage with consumers in a year-long campaign that would do more than just promote the brand, it would show consumers that they knew their audience.

We’d used the characters of Baz & Stretch in previous animated Super M promotions online but never to their fullest potential. There was something to them that went beyond playing silent roles as wide-eyed fans in our earlier animations. We knew they were the key to driving interaction with consumers.
Baz & Stretch

Most brands create these sorts of characters as mascots for the brand itself, but Baz & Stretch were designed to reflect the interests of the audience. They don’t just belong to Super M: they’re fans of the brand with their own exciting lives and a wide variety of interests. We’d already planned to use them in follow-up campaigns and this new campaign we were drafting needed to really touch base with consumers and get into their headspace. We called it M is for Me and that meant it had to be all about the consumer experience.

The thing about people is that, when they buy a brand, they invest more than just their money into the experience. It becomes a part of their lifestyle. Especially in the current marketplace, and dealing with today’s youth, you’re looking at people who buy everything from their sneakers to their smartphones in order to say something about themselves. In essence, the “M” in Super M already belonged to the consumer. We just needed to show them how in tune the brand was with their interests.

Once we had that core idea in place, we divided the campaign into some pretty clear-cut phases: M is for MusicM is for Money and… well, you’ll have to wait and see about the rest. An energetic, youthful audience like the one that purchases Super M needed a brand to approach them with something that resonated with them – the chance to win something big and exciting, and the chance to keep winning throughout the campaign. We offered consumers both those opportunities with a simple code located on the wrapper of every Super M they purchased. All they had to do was SMS that code to us and they immediately gained entry to win both weekly airtime bundles and a crazy grand prize of a trip for themselves and their friends to visit the world famous Ibiza Rocks Hotel for a four-night, all-expenses-paid trip. What’s more, we’re sending them to this insane party on Ibiza Rocks’ eighth birthday, which promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience.

It took only a few days for word to get out about the competition once stock hit the stands, with entries climbing from almost 1000 on the first day to peaks of over 3000 votes per day in just two weeks. By the time January came around we were receiving daily entries nearing 10,000 entries a day. By the end of the campaign we had received 284,966 entries. Ultimately, one lucky winner was selected from all those entrants and he’s planning his trip right now.

But that’s just the first phase of the campaign.

One of the most important factors in creating a campaign like this is making it simple for consumers to enter again and again. Especially when we now shift into the “M is for Money” phase of the campaign. Things shouldn’t get confusing in this transitional period, and so making use of the same USSD code and SMS entry system for the next phase of the campaign will make that transition as smooth as possible.

M is for Money has already kicked off and we look forward to seeing even better results in this leg of the campaign. And hey, we’re already warming up for next year’s version of the same thing!

The Finale of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure: The Dolphins

It’s the final episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure! The entire web series has been a lot of fun to track as its following has grown online over the last few weeks. A big up to our team for their amazing work on this series. Well done, everybody!

I’ve seen the light! I’m making my way back to Rosina’s dance studio to fix things between us. But how am I gonna do it? And will she forgive me? There’s only one way to find out…

Kagiso’s Island of Treasure Episode 09: The Legend, Pt 2

Remember last week’s episode of Kagiso’s Island? The one where Kagiso threw that tantrum at the Bob Marley Museum? Hardly the behaviour of a legend. Hopefully he can figure out what went wrong in today’s episode.

Remember everything I said back in Episode 2 about needing a good team? Well I was wrong. All you need is yourself. I’m a one-man film crew and I’m hitting the streets of Jamaica to prove I’ve got what it takes to host the Tropika Island of Treasure 5!

Next Week: I’ve never been one for saying sorry, but sometimes (very, VERY rarely), it just has to be done. It’s back to Rosina’s studio with me to make amends, find my team and finish this thing once and for all.

Kagiso’s Island of Treasure Episode 08: The Legend, Pt 1

Let’s face it. The thing most people know about Jamaica is that it’s where Bob Marley is from. Well, that and something-something about a little known “traditional remedy”. Either way, it’s good to see Kagiso finally touch base with the legend by visiting the Bob Marley Museum. Although he may be getting a bit too big-headed, hm?

There probably isn’t anyone anywhere who hasn’t heard of Bob Marley, but if there is, I’m going to change all that. Me and my team head to the Bob Marley Museum to shed some light on the history of reggae and show off my skills as a serious documentarian. What could possibly go wrong?

Kagiso’s Island of Treasure Episode 07: Yohan Blake

You’ve seen all the episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure so far, but this is the one we’re most proud of. For this very special extra-length episode, we managed to secure an interview with Olympic medalist Yohan Blake. This guy is the second-fastest man in the world, training alongside Usain Bolt! What makes this especially great is that Kagiso doesn’t hold back in this completely unscripted interview with Blake. It’s awesome!

The last sport I played involved a Ping-Pong ball and a plastic cup, but today Rosina’s taken me to a local sports club to meet one of the world’s greatest athletes: Yohan Blake. He may run fast, but let’s see how he does when he’s in the hot seat with me?

Kagiso’s Island of Treasure Episode 06: The Cook-Off

Ever since I got to Jamaica, I’ve been hearing about this “jerk” chicken stuff. Apparently it’s some kind of spicy dish. Rosina’s taking me to Grill 71 to try it out. I doubt it’ll come close to the stuff my mum makes at home.

Baz & Stretch get to Ibiza in our latest Super M animation

Pirate

The latest in our series of Super M animations featuring Baz & Stretch is online today. As always, our illustration/animation team is really working hard to push the quality of these videos with each one they produce. There’s some awesome illustration here from Kyle Baillie, great work from our animator Andre Ackermann, and more crazy voicework from Bevan Cullinan.

The pirate’s appearance in the previous video had us in stitches even at the script stage, and considering what we were aiming to communicate in this video, he seemed like the right guy to make a return appearance. Part of what we’re building here with Baz & Stretch is a world for the Super M brand to play with, so chances are you’ll see a few other recurring characters pop up here & there as we move forward. This video’s the last one in our ‘M is for Music’ campaign, but the overarching ‘M is for Me’ work with the brand continues, and so you can expect more Baz & Stretch very, very soon.

Kagiso’s Island of Treasure Episode 05: The Musician

Ever heard of a singer named Tessanne Chin? Well she’s one of Jamaica’s best known musical talents… you know, right after Bob Marley and those other guys. She’s never been put to the test by someone with my animal keen hearing though. Let’s see what she knows.
